His Thought

The Marxologist

Porfirio Miranda studied Marx in depth. He read the complete works (MEW) including letters and other documents that had been published.

If his knowledge of Marx is extensive, his interpretation and analysis show the maturity of wisdom of a person going beyond Marxist theory or against it. He recognizes his great contributions, and also his limits.

For JPM the most positive contribution of Marx was his denouncing of institutional injustice and the so-called world revolution.

“Marx intervenes at the height of philosophy: the moment when philosophy takes history as an object in its philosophizing. This moment is Hegel” (1).

One of the most clear distinctions in JPM’s work is between Marx and Marxism. He called himself a Marxologist not a Marxist. In the English translation of “El cristianismo de Marx”, the editor of Orbis books changed – rightly – the title to “Marx against the Marxist.

Not only does Marx tacitly recognize the existence of human liberty. It is valuation.
"That which Marx thinks worthy, that which he esteems, is that what man gets by his own free decision and his own effort. And he holds in low regard the changes that in the last instance are reduced to the effect of natural law. The Determinist Marxism is completely ignorant of the literary works of Marx" (2).

In the manuscripts of José Porfirio we have nearly 3,000 pages on Marx. In 1969 he wrote the first notebook on Marx. In 1975 he began reading and reflecting on Marx Engels Werke. And in 1984 he re-read Marx.

These manuscripts will be available in 2007.
