The Philosopher
Porfirio Miranda reaches the maturity of his thinking in the philosophical works. There the knowledge acquired during his life-time of study, spring or stay underlying in his research and reflection.
It can be said that the last thirty years of is life was dedicated to philosophy.
He values his contribution to philosophy far greater than that of his exegetic works for which he is world renown.
The consolidation and full maturity of the philosophical thinking of Miranda is accomplished when reading the complete works of Hegel. In his years as an exegetist he himself says he became acquainted with Hegel through reading other authors and from them he formed his own opinions. Reading Hegel’s work directly, and in the original German gave him an entirely new understanding.
Dr. Mier y Terán, rector of UAM (Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana) says the book “Hegel was Right” represents one of the most innovative in contemporary philosophy in Ibero America. He proposes (and succeeds exceedingly well) to revise completely Hegel in his original language, unraveling the mysteries of the most subtle inflections of German. Such dedication came from an inspired and in depth reading of such a complexity of ideas.
This is the epoch of the true intellectual maturity of our author where he, using as a base the philosophy of Hegel, made a synthesis of his own thinking from a lifetime of research.
His main research was in: the Philosophies of Law, Science, Hegel and Anthropology.
He was Professor of Philosophy of Law at UNAM in Mexico City. He left us four written notebooks of his investigations. These are already available.
In the area of Philosophy of Science we have the book “I appeal to Reason” which is a pioneer in Latin America. Its principal thesis is to prove the scientificy of moral despite the attacks from the positivists, materialists and skeptics. We also have seventeen handwritten notebooks available to the interested researchers.
Miranda’s thoughts, on the philosophy of Hegel, are found in his book “Hegel was right”. This book is a synthesis of what he would have liked to have done more extensively. “Hegel was right”, said Miranda could have been written in ten books not just one.
Fortunately we have JPM’s manuscripts with his comments on Hegel. Eight were written in a first moment, and another five some years after. In them the author writes on his reflections on Hegel making notes and cross referencing them. These are now available.
On anthropological philosophy we only have one small but very valuable book: Anthropology and Indigenism.
